How He Asked

How He Asked

We are officially one month away from our wedding date so I thought it would be appropriate to share our proposal story on the blog. Cam proposed to me on September 6th, 2019 after dating for a little over five years. He had the most special and meaningful surprise for me while catching me completely off-guard.

On this Friday in September, it was a regular scheduled date night and Cam’s turn to plan, so he had made a delicious steak dinner followed by a four-wheeler ride. All of which was completely normal for our relationship, so I never thought anything of it. I even remember trying to get him to toast at dinner hoping he would say something about my new job I had just accepted that day and he ended up toasting to our dog 😞 (I think the nerves were getting the best of him).

Little did I know that while we were out on the four-wheeler, he had one of my good friends, Katie, come to the house and set up a romantic backyard campfire. When we eventually returned from checking fields and putting the dog away, he casually mentions, ‘I have something I want to show you in the backyard.’

At this point I still haven’t clued into anything and as we come around the corner, I see the rose petals and a little black box sitting on a blanket. My heart started pounding as he gets down on one knee and says some of the sweetest things, I have ever heard him say. We were so caught up in the moment that later that night I had asked him to repeat what he said so I could remember it and he even struggled to remember through the haze.

Between the tears and excitement, we finally got the ring on and spent the night laying out by the campfire with champagne and FaceTiming our family members. Not only had I been distracted by a new job offer to not notice he was planning a proposal, but my parents were also in Ireland on vacation at the time. He had asked my dad the week prior and it was such a special moment when we called them to share the news and they had both already known it was going to happen.

Cam had mentioned how many obstacles he faced when trying to propose to me from finding the time during busy season, to waiting for the ring to be finished that he knew as soon as that ring was ready, it was happening.

Looking back, the only thing that I thought was strange was he told me to dress casual for our date night but when I insisted on wearing sweats, he said that leggings would be a little better and he has never told me what to wear. I very appropriately paired them with cowboy boots and a camo jacket. I still laugh about my attire for this very special moment.

This proposal was everything I could have ever dreamed of and it was extra special because it was just the two of us at our own home. Love doesn’t have to be fancy or flashy, it is purposeful and enduring. I love this man more than anything and I can’t wait to be his wife in a few short weeks.
