Small Business Spotlight: Grüv

Small Business Spotlight: Grüv

Our Story

We opened in 2002 with the vision of making fashion seem more approachable and fun for the average person. The fashion industry can appear daunting and we hoped to keep it down to earth and welcoming to all! Sally was the buyer and manager of the Shoe Box, a local shoe store from 1991-2002 when she left to open her own space. Sally’s two daughters grew up at Grüv which inspired her oldest, Holly, to join the family business and they have been running it together ever since.

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer men’s and ladies clothing, accessories and footwear in our 2000 square foot store in downtown Stratford. When you walk in you will notice the art deco inspired store design, upbeat music and friendly atmosphere. We try to keep prices reasonable and stay away from the typical “mall fare” fashion offerings. Pieces are hand picked with love and nothing is stocked in huge quantities which ensures your outfit is special and unique.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

We enjoy the creative freedom aspect the most. We get so much inspiration from our collections as well as from our customers and how they style our offerings. There is always something new and it is so enjoyable for us! There is nothing more rewarding than running your own business while doing something you absolutely love.

WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

The mother daughter team allows for lots of fun and laughs between us! We buy with two different generations in mind for the wide demographic that we serve. Working together ensures that an owner is always in store to make sure you have the best experience we can offer!

WHAT IS A CHALLENGE YOUR BUSINESS IS CURRENTLY FACING?

The hardest challenge we have faced has been Sally’s health journey. When she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2014, life took on an unexpected turn. She has had many treatments, including lots of radiation, high-dose chemo, and seven major surgeries throughout the years. This left Holly to operate the business alone while Sally was recovering at home, which was no small feat. When COVID-19 hit, we were forced to close for two months but having been through all that we have together, everything was kept in perspective. If you have your health and the people you love close to you, you can get through anything together.

What do you love about the business community in Stratford?

The community has rallied to support so many downtown businesses through this difficult year and we were definitely humbled and so grateful for the support we felt. We are thankful to have a community built on love and awareness of how important it is to support small business. Stratford is a unique community and the COVID experience has allowed it to shine in a new way throughout the challenges.

We are incredibly blessed to have such amazing and loyal customers who have walked with us through this journey. Our store wouldn’t be what it is today without all of these beautiful people who have supported us and continue to support us.

This holiday season will be a bit different for all of us. We are fully stocked in all things comfy and cozy to get you through the winter holidays at home. Find style ideas and some of our products on Instagram and Facebook!
